Thesis Proposal Update Communication of Inductive Inference
نویسنده
چکیده
The original proposal described the goal of the thesis as an investigation into means to combine local inductive hypotheses into a single globally consistent hypothesis. The reviewer agreed with the defined problem, and furthermore supports the goal. The proposal advocated the use of version space intersection as the integration method. Version space intersection is the theoretically correct approach, but as with many theoretically correct approaches in AI, it has turned out that for practical usage that it is too computationally expensive as it relies on a near exhaustive search to deal with all all possible scenarios. More recent and extensive experimental results demonstrate this, and has exposed another more fundamental problem: On several well known machine learning data sets (mushrooms & congressional voting records) the version space intersection approach was not only computationally expensive, but more importantly, was unable to achieve useful summarization of the training data. In this we have reached experimental agreement with the reviewer. We also agree with her that in that certain domains, where the hypothesis language is restricted, that such an approach might still be useful. However, whilst Hirsh developed the version space intersection approach and in later work showed that it was not very practical, he never discussed its application to a distributed agent setting, which is why we carried out our initial work. We now have experimental evidence that it is not an effective method to deal with the problem of integration of distributed hypotheses (which may be why Hirsh did not consider it, but this is conjecture).

Ph.D. Thesis Proposal: The Communication of Inductive Inferences
We propose a new approach to communication between agents that perform inductive inference. Previous systems have used methods based on voting strategies or theory refinement to integrate multiple learned models. Our approach uses version spaces as a medium for the inter-agent communication of inductive inferences. This allows multiple models to be integrated using the principle of set intersec...

This proposal is primarily aimed at the third group of agent systems. In addition to the study of the design of individual agents and communities, recent work has focused on allowing diverse agents and communities to interoperate. This is the goal of the Knowledge Sharing Effort [KSE] (Patil et.al., 1992). The Knowledge Query and Manipulation Language [KQML] (Finin et.al., 1993) is the componen...
متن کاملOn the role of search for learning from examples
Gold [Gol67] discovered a fundamental enumeration technique, the so-called identi cation-by-enumeration, a simple but powerful class of algorithms for learning from examples (inductive inference). We introduce a variety of more sophisticated (and more powerful) enumeration techniques and characterize their power. We conclude with the thesis that enumeration techniques are even universal in that...
متن کاملThesis Proposal Distributed Algorithms for Probabilistic Inference and Learning
Probabilistic inference and learning problems arise naturally in distributed systems such as sensor networks, teams of mobile robots, and recommendation systems. In these systems, the data resides at multiple distributed locations, and the network nodes need to collaborate, in order to perform the inference or learning task. This thesis has three thrusts. First, we propose distributed implement...
